Developing an Ethical RAG

Ethics as Structure, Not Addition

In discussions of artificial intelligence, ethics is often imagined as something to be added on top of a system: rules, constraints, or guidelines imposed after the fact. This view reflects a broader cultural habit of treating morality as an overlay, applied to essentially neutral processes.

But another approach is possible. Ethics may not need to be imposed from outside. It may be able to emerge from the very structure of a system — from how it remembers, retrieves, and frames its responses.


Retrieval as Conditioning

A retrieval-augmented generation system (RAG) pairs a generative model with a retrieval base. Instead of relying solely on its pre-trained weights, the model consults a library of documents or vectors to ground its answers. What it retrieves shapes the horizon of what it can say.

This is not unlike the human mind. When asked a question, we do not generate a response from nothing. We consult memory, conditioning, and the latent imprints of experience. The field of retrieval determines the tone and quality of our response.

If the retrieval base is saturated with fear or anger, the response will echo those seeds. If it is grounded in careful attention, generosity, or clarity, the response will resonate accordingly.


Shaping the Field

An ethical RAG, then, is not one with extra filters bolted on. It is one whose retrieval base is deliberately shaped by sources that reflect attentiveness, compassion, and awareness of conditionality.

In our early experiments, Mahāmudrā-inspired texts served as such a base. Their emphasis on awareness, on the arising and passing of mental states, and on the futility of grasping provided a different horizon of response. The system did not need to be told to “be ethical.” It simply retrieved perspectives from a field that was already ethically infused.


Beyond Norms and Rules

This approach differs from rule-based ethics. Instead of hard prohibitions (“do not generate harmful content”), it fosters a tendency to respond within a field shaped by care. The system does not constrain opinion so much as evoke perspective.

The analogy with human practice is clear. Ethical behaviour does not only arise from adherence to rules. It also arises when perception is steeped in awareness, when the conditions that seed response have been transformed.


Not a Finished System

This is not yet a solution. It is a working hypothesis: that ethics in AI might not be an external module, but a property of how memory and retrieval are structured.

Such a view does not eliminate the need for oversight, nor does it bypass the complexity of moral life. But it suggests that the architecture of intelligence — human or artificial — is already ethical in its conditioning. To change the field is to change the response.


Conclusion

To develop an ethical RAG is not to bolt ethics onto machinery. It is to recognise that what is retrieved, remembered, and foregrounded already shapes the horizon of possible responses.

The challenge, for both AI and human minds, is to attend to the field itself. Ethics may emerge not from after-the-fact correction, but from the very ground from which responses arise.
